I am looking for help with my business...

I am unsure of my duties as Director

The duties of a Director are not something to be taken likely. The law has been changing significantly as a result of the Companies Act 2006. Please read the Directors Duties booklet [PDF] we have produced to help you assess the role and responsibility.

I am doing research and development in my business

The UK has some rather generous provisions if your company is spending money on research and development in a genuine new advancement in knowledge or technology.

One should definitely consider the investment you are making in your business in this area and speak to an advisor about how to get tax relief from your investment. A short guide to this is given here, and if you think this may be of relevance please contact Sarah Harris in our tax department.

I am travelling in and out of the UK setting up my overseas business

If your primary business is overseas and you are now travelling in and out of the UK setting up your UK subsidiary, and/or business ventures, you need to be careful with your Visa status.

If you get the wrong side of the law you can be banned from entering the UK which would obviously have a significant impact on what you are doing. Please read our release on Business Visas, and contact Juliet Oury in our immigration department should you have any further questions.

My business needs an audit

The thresholds for the requirement for a UK company to have an audit have been going up and up in recent years. However, many companies do still require one. Furthermore if your company is part of a international group, the group as a whole needs to be considered so even the smallest UK subsidiary can still be required to have an Audit. Regulated businesses are also required to have an audit irrelevant of their size. Please see our technical release on Accounting Regulations [PDF] which deals with some of these issues, and contact Ian Phipps should you need to discuss matters further.
