Salary Exchange Shake-Up: Are You Ready for the £2,000
The 2025 Autumn Budget has thrown a curveball: from April 2029, salary sacrifice into pensions will be capped at £2,000 for National Insurance (NI) savings.
So, what’s the damage? If your contributions usually fall below the cap, you can breathe easy. But for those sacrificing more, anything above £2,000 will attract 8% NI for basic rate taxpayers or 2% for higher rate taxpayers. Employers also lose the 15% NI saving on amounts above the cap (ouch!), making strategic planning essential.
The silver lining? Salary Exchange isn’t going anywhere until at least 2029, and employers can still save £250+ per employee annually. For high earners, it’s still a smart way to trim adjusted net income, keep your £12,570 personal allowance, and even qualify for 30 hours free childcare.
