UK Travel Requirements: ETA, eVisa & Entry Guidance (2026)

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

As part of the UK’s move towards a fully digital border system, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) was introduced to strengthen security and streamline entry for eligible travellers.

The UK’s ETA scheme was initially introduced in October 2023, when applications first opened as part of the government’s phased rollout of digital border permissions. The scheme moved from implementation phase to strict enforcement on 25 February 2026, from which point eligible non-visa nationals will not be able to board transport to the UK without an approved ETA.

Non-compliance may result in delays and disruption to your travel plans. In the most serious cases, you may be denied boarding if you are unable to present a valid ETA. Please note that it can take up to three working days (Monday to Friday) for an ETA to be issued, although it is often processed sooner.

Important: If you have an approved ETA and the passport used for the application expires, you must apply for a new ETA with the updated passport.

Dual National British Citizens

If you are a dual national who holds British citizenship, you are not eligible to apply for an ETA. Instead, you must travel to the UK with a valid British passport or a valid passport with a document confirming your right of abode in the UK, such as a certificate of entitlement, to avoid being refused entry to the UK from 25 February 2026.

You may be refused boarding if you do not have the requisite documents for travel to the UK.

Important: Applying for a British passport from overseas can take at least six weeks, while a Right of Abode application may take up to three weeks. To avoid any disruption or risk of being denied travel to the UK, you should plan ahead and allow sufficient time for your application to be processed.

eVisa Account Details

If you are a visa holder, your eVisa account details must be up to date with your current passport or travel document used for travel. Failure to do so from 28 January 2026 may result in refusal of boarding or delays that could impact your journey. It is important to review and update these details, if required, at least 24 hours before travel.
