A Wolf in Economist’s Clothing

Posted on: 02 Mar, 23

When the wheels come off it's good to know you can get advice and support. We have some great examples of both this month.

Salutations Oury. How can we be in March already? Feels like 5 minutes ago we were talking about Christmas and VAT returns. What’s top of the agenda now?

Well we’re nearing the end of the Tax Year Clark – now is the time for everyone to maximise their tax efficiency for the outgoing tax year and make sure they make the most of their tax efficient savings. Are you all sorted?

Mmmm, sounds complicated? You know I’m not keen on complicated.

Well, the advice for everyone is to speak to their accountant and financial advisor, and it’s a good job you’ve got me!

Like I could forget that!

So what else has been happening?

We’ve had lots of wonderful guests on the podcast, including Martin Wolf from the FT. I totally went fanboy on that one. He gave us loads of super useful advice about how we should think about navigating the current UK and global economic situation.

Do you think anyone in the Government was listening in? Maybe to get some practical tips for the Spring Budget? Or at least how to put up their circus Big Top properly.

Who knows,at least they are unlikely to have to worry about people throwing tomatoes at them, rotten or otherwise. Anyway, enough about the turnips in Number 10. People come to this newsletter for positive stories.

Indeed they do and I've got some for you.

Hit me (not literally)

Well first up, if like us you’ve been wringing your hands wondering what you can do to help Ukraine.

I have, you know I'm quite the one for hand wringing.

Well our friends at Meeko/Lucidica who provide remote staffing solutions are amazing. Despite the adversity faced from the war, their doors remained open in Kyiv, allowing them to support the greater Ukrainian community and their clients UK-side. They’ve written a whole blog about it here: Meeko's 2022 Year in Review.

That sounds fantastic,

It certainly is. They even offer family members of staff to use the Meeko office as a hub to shelter, work, and socialise. I mean promoting office and workplace social engagement is an achievement in its own right for a hybrid work environment. These people are doing all of that and more in a warzone.

Hats off to them then. How can we get more involved?

Clark says...
Oury says...

Well obviously you can tell everyone you know who is expanding to think about working with Meeko - their website is here - particularly if they are looking for tech talent. And, if you aren’t looking for anyone right now you could always chip in to Lucidica’s fundraising for relief efforts in the Ukraine

That’s great, to be able to offer really practical support where it is needed. I know a lot of people and businesses are struggling closer to home as well.

Oury says...

They are, that’s true and we can help there too.

Of course we can, we have that new restructuring and insolvency whizz who has just joined. Nick Parsk.

Hello

Oury says...

If anyone can help you when you think you are in dire straits it’s Nick.

I’m more of a Pink Floyd man myself.

Clark says...

Shame, still at least you’ve written us this super helpful guide to pre-pack administration, which is just one tool that company directors can potentially use to get themselves sorted.

Clark says...
Oury says...

Flat Pack Administration Clark? I thought you weren’t allowed back into IKEA after the Odvar incident.

Oury says...

Not any time soon Clark.

We are but two fictitious characters throwing out ideas and comment to stimulate debate and collect information. As professional service firms, we are open minded people and think independent thought and debate is essential to help understand, as well as navigate, complex problems. By joves – doing business across Europe (and the world) is set to become a whole lot more complex in light of recent seismic political events. As businesses - we provide information and hopefully some wisdom - and we see this blog and its caricatures merely as a much more fun, perhaps slightly controversial way, of stimulating debate and collecting ideas. We’re searching for some true pearls of wisdom, and as we find them, we’ll share them with you.
